Day 1: 6.21 - Summer Solstice

On the first day, Brad and I walked up the road from McCarthy to Mike and Karen's house where we hooked up with Jason and Mike.  We were treated to a second breakfast (which was much better then the first) of homemade pancakes!  Eventually, we drug ourselves away from their beautiful home and headed off across the Root and Kennecott glaciers.  Mike was our tour guide as he led us through the maze of the glacier and pointed out and described more geological details then I will ever remember - a great way to travel!   We camped just up the Hidden Creek Valley from Hidden Creek Lake, which Jökulhlaups annually.

A look at where we would be spending most of the day. Beautiful colors.

Half pipe!

Looking into Hidden Creek Valley. We would enter it about a 1/4 mile up glacier (to the right).

There were lots of fossils held in the limestone layer on this trip.

A shot of our route into Hidden Creek Valley. We followed the brush-line from right to left back into the valley.
